The DCAS-administered exam (numbers 7311 through 7322 in the current cycle) is a cognitive-abilities test — about 85 multiple-choice questions in 2.5 hours. It covers verbal reasoning, logical reasoning, spatial orientation, visual intelligence, short and long-term memory, problem sensitivity, information ordering, and deductive and inductive reasoning. Math and grammar are not tested.

You must score at least 70 to pass. Candidates are ranked on the eligible list by final score, which is the multiple-choice score plus any Veterans Preference, Legacy, and New York City Residency credits (residency credit alone is 10 points). NYPD calls candidates for the academy in list-number order, so a higher score gets you called sooner. An eligible list typically remains active for four years.

DCAS opens the Police Officer exam on a rolling monthly cycle. You apply through the Online Application System (OASYS), pay the fee, and sit the computer-based test at a Pearson VUE-style proctored center.

You do not have to be a resident to sit for the exam, but you must become a resident of NYC or a designated surrounding county by the time you are appointed to the academy. Full eligibility rules are on the DCAS Notice of Examination.
